Hello there! It’s been a while since my last post and seems as if the world is a different place. In late March I suspended my guide service due to the Covid-19 pandemic and self quarantined at my place in Sierraville. I fished here and there as the lockdown continued. As things slowly reopened I tested the waters and was able to resume guiding around the first of June. With Covid 19 protocols in place, I am booking trips again and my calendar is filling quickly. Thankfully, I have weathered the storm thus far. Now onto the fishing report!
Truckee River
This spring has been really fun on the Truckee River. Flows are good at this time with the river running at 251 cfs in town and a bit bigger at 885 cfs near Boca. Water temps are in the low to mid 50’s and the bugs are hatching like crazy! Dry fly fishing is as good as it gets right now with baetis, March Browns , PMD’s, Green Drakes, caddis and a few golden stone flies hatching daily. Nymphing has been ok lately with fish being caught using a dry/dropper or tight line rig. Fishing pressure is steady with a lot of people enjoying the river. Dry flies: Parachute adams(14-16), purple parachute adams(14-16), green drake duns(10-12), green drake emergers(10-12), AK’s Melon quill(14-16), Mercer’s Missing Link(16-18), March Brown duns(14-16), BWO duns(14-18). Nymphs: Jigged baetis(14-16), Rusty jig(14-16), turkey flashback jig(14), duracel jig(14-16) Sweet Pea(14-16)
Middle Feather River
Flows are dropping to normal summer flows on the Wild and Scenic Middle Feather River and the fishing is as good as I’ve ever seen. The river around Clio is starting to get a bit low but as you work your way downstream past Graeagle the flows are better. Water temps are in the low to mid 60’s. If you’re looking to get away from the crowds this is the place to fly fish. The bugs are going off with BWO’s, green drakes, PMD’s, yellow sallies, caddis and midges in the mix. Fish are eating well presented dries most of the day with the evening rise going off. Nymphing is still good as well. Dry/dropper rigs and tight lining are working all day.
