Fly Fishing Truckee River
About The River
The Truckee River flows out of Lake Tahoe to the north towards the Town of Truckee. From here the Truckee, an iconic western freestone river, turns eastward and continues to Pyramid Lake, NV. Known for its finicky wild trout and exceptional views, the Truckee is a must for anglers of all experience levels. From Truckee to the state line is where I spend most of my time guiding anglers.
Trophy Fish
Wild Browns, Rainbows, and Mountain Whitefish are the main draw, but there are Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (original trout strain to the Truckee) and Kokanee Salmon available at times. Size range from 10” to 25+” with average being 12″-14“. The Truckee River is open year round and fishes best from April-August and again in October-November.
Guided Trips
All fly fishing on the Truckee River is done while walk and wading. Some spots require a bit more effort to get to but are worth the effort. Wading the Truckee can be challenging depending flows and location although there are areas that offer fairly straightforward access to and across the river. I teach proper wading skills and how to safely wade the Truckee River at all flows. During times of high water we are limited to the bank and near shore waters. Summertime can find us fishing and wading up a boulder strewn pocket water section immersed to our waist in the cool water.
Fishing Seasons
The Truckee River is open year-round from Trout Creek to the state line with best fishing in late spring through mid-summer. Late summer can be a bit tough but things pick up again in the fall as water temperatures cool and the fish start to pack on weight for the winter. Winter fishing can be good and is characterized by small flies and cold water. We fish a variety of techniques suited to the water types that we are fishing. Nymphing is most productive, but we do have some opportunities to fish dries to rising trout.
