Truckee River

Fishing on the Truckee River is very good at this time. Flows are steady at 300 cfs coming out of the dam at Lake Tahoe. In town it’s 288cfs and picks up a bit at 340 below Martis Creek( above Glenshire Bridge). Water temps are ranging in the low to mid 60’s and it is still prudent to check water temps often and stop fishing when it reaches 68 degrees. There are some BWO mayflies hatching midday but not a ton of bug activity right now. Pressure has lessened from the overcrowded mess that was 4th of July and will drop off a bit more as kids return to school.

I’ve been finding fish in a variety of water types from heavy pocket water to riffles to slower deeper runs. Per usual, I am mostly running dry dropper rigs with the majority of my fish taken on the nymph. We are moving multiple fish a day to the big dry, which is super exciting! Fishing larger bugs such as stonefly imitations under the indicator remains good as well as tight line nymphing.

Little Truckee River

Flows have dropped from 150 cfs to 65 cfs over the past few days on the Little Truckee. Water temps range from 48-55 degrees and there is a solid PMD mayfly hatch starting around 10:30 am and lasting into the mid afternoon. Pressure has been fairly light except for the Upper Lot which is crowded most days. The green drakes have waned but fish are still looking up for them.

I am fishing dry droppers with a green drake on top with good success but will start to use a hopper as the drakes stop being affective. Fish are eating a variety of nymphs with most coming in on a pmd or bwo type fly. Look for rising fish mid morning and switch to a PMD dry at this time. I am still getting away with 5x tippet but may need to go lighter as flows continue to drop. 6X is almost mandatory at the upper lot as the locals that fish there every day are educating those fish.

Middle Fork Feather River

Water temps are too warm to safely catch and release on the Middle Feather at this time. Hoping they cool down around the start of September. Check back for updates.

Milton Update

Water is once again flowing into Milton bringing it back to normal levels and water temps. I haven’t been out there but will be going in the next few days and will have a fresh report then.
