With flows dropping steadily to 40cfs on the Portola gauge, now is the time to fish the Middle Fork Feather River. Frazier and Graeagle Creek are adding additional flow as runoff in the Lost Sierra is coming to an end. Below Two Rivers flows are estimated at around 300 cfs, which is a bit pushy but fishable. Water temps are good throughout the river ranging from the mid to upper 50’s. Things are starting to get a bit warm above Frazier Creek in the afternoons with temps hitting the mid 60’s. Use your stream thermometer and stop fishing when temps reach 68 degrees.

The fish are very happy on the Middle Fork Feather River with a variety of food to choose from. PMD’s, Bwo’s, and March browns are hatching daily and the fish are chowing on nymphs until the hatch gets going. Ovipositing yellow sallies have the fish looking up mid afternoon providing a fun dry fly experience. Caddis and yellow sallies are hatching in the evenings for those that want to fish the evening rise. I havent fished the streamer this week as the nymph and dry fly bite is too fun to pass up.
We are finding fish in a variety of water types from skinny riffles to slow frog water. The fish in the riffles and riffle runs are very aggressive and will smash a well presented fly. Look for slower takes in the frog water.
