Middle Fork Feather River
Fly fishing on the Middle Fork Feather River is improved after a series of storms over the holidays increased flows tremendously. As of this writing, the Portola gauge is reading around 200cfs and dropping. Down from a high of 2500cfs. Water temps are 38 degrees with over 3 feet of visibility.
Swinging flies on the Trout Spey set up, while fun, has been really inconsistent. I went 3 sessions without a grab. Yesterday changed that as I had numerous grabs that I couldn’t come tight to. Finally, I was able to get one to hand in the afternoon. Nymphing is working well with fishing eating baetis nymphs and midge pupa. BWO’s are hatching in the afternoon but I haven’t seen many risers, yet. I’m finding most of my fish in walking speed or slower water with a couple feet of depth.
