A first fish on the fly for Kirk

Middle Fork Feather River

Improved water temperatures are helping on the Middle Fork Feather River this week. Cool mornings and warm afternoons are greeting anglers with fall like conditions. Flows are holding steady with better conditions available below Two Rivers access. Fishing pressure is light during the week and a bit heavier on the weekends but it never feels crowded. We are still seeing some bwo and trico spinner falls mid morning. Isonychia mayflies and fall caddis hatches have yet to materialize.

Dry dropper is still the name of the game with tightline nymphing working as well. I haven’t found the need to go any lighter than 5x tippet in the lower clearer flows. Some dry fly action is happening during the spinner fall and a few eats on the chubby.

What’s Working

Nymphs: Plastic Surgeon (14-16), Czech Bomb black/red yellow/light olive (16-18), Rusty Jig (14-16), Electrolyte Baetis (14-16), Zebra Midge (18-20), Dries: Chubby Chernobyl orange (8-10), Film Critic (18-20), Sparkle Flag (18-20), Parachute Adams (18-20), Parachute BWO (16-20), Trico spinner (20-22)

Truckee River

Fall fishing is in full swing on the Truckee River with solid flows, good water temperatures and willing trout. All methods are working with the dry dropper still my favorite. Hard to beat watching a big ol Truckee River trout rise up to inspect the big dry. Sometimes they eat and sometimes they refuse. Exciting either way!

Water temps are in the upper 50’s to low 60’s and flows are holding steady with 280cfs being let out of Lake Tahoe. I am still expecting them to reduce flows to around 100cfs. Hopefully this happens soon. We are seeing some blue wing olives hatching mid morning and a few fall caddis shucks on the rocks are signifying the start of this hatch.
