Truckee River
Fly fishing on the Truckee River is good at this time with water temps in the 50’s to low 60’s and a variety of bugs available. An anticipated change in flows coming out of Lake Tahoe occurred yesterday rising to 199 cfs from 74 cfs. Flows are expected to go up to 300 cfs so keep an eye out for that. What does this all mean? In the short term, wading in places may become more difficult, but the fishing should remain good as the fish settle in. For the long term this will be good for the fish and therefore the fisherman.

We are seeing good dry fly fishing from 10pm til around 2pm and later on some days. Pmd, bwo, and a few March Browns are hatching along with ovipositing yellow sallies and caddis and the fish are eating all of them. Green drakes are showing in the canyon but very sparse along Glenshire. We have had eats and caught fish on so many different patterns that at times it seems as if it’s a one and done type situation. We get an eat once on a fly then they won’t touch it again. Change flies and it happens again. It’s enough to drive one crazy. Dry droppers are working when fish aren’t rising along with tightline and indicator nymphing. I haven’t thrown streamers at all lately but can imaging they will work right now as well.
We are finding fish in the usual places, current seams, soft spots in the pocket water, riffles and deeper runs. Look for with water good depth, broken surface current, structure and you’ll find fish.

Middle Fork Feather River

Middle Fork Feather River
Fly fishing on the Middle Fork Feather River is still good but water is getting warm and flows low. There are still decent flows below Two Rivers but water temps aren’t much better. Keep an eye on water temps and stop fishing when it reaches 68-70 degrees. Only a few more weeks before I stop fishing here until water temps drop back into a safe range in the fall.
Good dry fly fishing is available in the mornings as the bwo spinners fall to the river. Yellow Sallies ovipositing mid day has fish looking up as well. Pmd’s and bwo’s are hatching mid day. Dry dropper is still my go to with the dropper accounting for most of my grabs. These fish are fast so one really needs to be quick with the hookset.

Milton Lake Update
Unfortunately, no trailered boats are allowed on Milton this year so my drift boat is not allowed. We can still fish there from float tubes so if that appeals to you, get a date on my calendar.
