Middle Fork Feather River
Fishing on the Middle Feather has been outstanding this winter with the best dry fly bite I have seen since the river opened to winter fishing a few years back. Daily midge and baetis hatches have the fish looking up and feeding heavily. The last series of storms have brought the flows up steadily this past week finally cresting at just under 600cfs on the Portola gauge (estimated at about 800-1000 cfs in Graeagle ) with clarity being being the main issue. The fish seem to be settling into they higher flows and back on the feed. The epic dry fly bite should resume as the clarity increases and flows start to come down. Baetis, stones, PT’s and jigged streamers are all working at this time. The Trout Spey bite has been slow but still getting a few grabs this way.
Truckee River
The recent storms have helped bring our snowpack to around normal for this time of year. Access is good along the river at this time but expect some mud at the access points and the trails to the river. Flows are under 100cfs on the Truckee gauge and around 350cfs at Boca. Water temps are in the low 40’s. All methods are working with nymphing still the best way to get into fish. Baetis, winter stones, eggs, san juan worms and jigged streamers have moved fish this week. Very nice mid day baetis hatch happening daily in certain sections of the river with an opportunity to fish dries. Skwalas are starting to show but haven’t had any takers on the big dry yet.
